These words that Yourcenar ascribes to Hadrian have touched me deeply. This is why founding vision underlies the microcosm of my craft, whether it is painting, design or construction. And every time it is a vision of a city or a landscape in which the trace of man is evident as much as its absence is.
This is something that has more to do with a theatrical set-up than with possible reality: a stage awaiting the actors should they ever arrive. Therefore the drawings and paintings that are preliminary to the development of a project are its true essence and testament on paper or canvas.
